Field Service Technician

Field Service Technicians work on-site to diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair Caterpillar diesel engines and heavy mining equipment, including haul trucks, dozers, loaders, excavators, and other support equipment. This role requires strong mechanical and technical skills, attention to detail, the ability to work independently, and a commitment to safety and quality workmanship.

Required Responsibilities
- Diagnose, troubleshoot, repair, and commission Caterpillar and other heavy equipment systems, including engines, powertrain, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic control systems.
- Perform complete machine repairs, including rebuilding, repairing, replacing, and testing major machine components.
- Complete repairs independently from diagnosis through final testing with minimal supervision.
- Safely remove, repair, install, and commission engines, transmissions, differentials, hydraulic components, and other major machine systems.
- Conduct operational testing and inspections to verify repairs and ensure equipment is returned to service safely and efficiently.
- Use Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET), Service Information System (SIS), SIS 2.0, and other OEM diagnostic software to troubleshoot equipment, program ECMs, perform calibrations, and verify repairs.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, including Outlook, Word, and Excel, for communication and documentation.
- Identify, research, and order correct replacement parts using Caterpillar SIS 2.0 and OEM parts systems.
- Perform advanced electrical and hydraulic troubleshooting using service literature, wiring schematics, diagnostic software, and test equipment.
- Complete detailed work orders, service reports, inspection reports, warranty documentation, and accurate daily time tickets.
- Complete required site-specific safety paperwork, including FLRAs, inspections, and other customer-required documentation.
- Maintain all mandatory safety certifications and complete required customer and company safety training.
- Demonstrate a strong commitment to safety by following company policies, customer procedures, and mine site safety regulations.
- Maintain organized records of inspections, diagnostic findings, photographs, parts orders, and completed repairs.
- Work safely around heavy equipment using proper lockout/tagout, rigging, lifting, and isolation procedures.
- Safely rig, lift, and position heavy components using cranes, hoists, and lifting devices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by management.
- Communicate effectively with customers, supervisors, and coworkers regarding equipment status, repair progress, and technical recommendations.
- Work independently in remote mining environments while also contributing effectively as part of a team.
- Demonstrate strong problem-solving skills and the ability to make sound decisions in the field with minimal supervision.
- Maintain assigned service truck, tools, diagnostic equipment, and company assets in safe, clean, and serviceable condition.
- Maintain a clean and organized work area while ensuring all environmental and housekeeping standards are met.
- Stay current with Caterpillar product updates, new technologies, diagnostic procedures, and service information.

- Company flights are provided from Calgary or Edmonton to Fort McMurray

- High school diploma or equivalent
- Valid driver's license with a clean driver's abstract.
- Red Seal Heavy Equipment Technician (HET) Journeyperson Certificate required
- Fall Protection certification required
- Elevated Work Platform certification required
- 2+ years of mining experience required
- 3–5 years of field service experience, preferably on a mine site
- Strong communication skills.
- Strong problem-solving skills.
- Experience troubleshooting, diagnosing, and repairing Caterpillar diesel engines, including C18, C27, C32, 3500 Series, and C175 engines
- Heavy Equipment experience required (haul trucks, excavators, loaders, dozers, graders, and other mining equipment)
- Working knowledge of Microsoft programs
- Understanding of Caterpillar warranty programs and coverage preferred
- Advanced knowledge of ET/SIS/TMI
- Ability to work independently with little or no direction
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working on engine tear down, rebuilds, and complete system repair preferred
- Clean repair and recondition equipment and components based on CAT Re-Use criteria
- Knowledge of parts used
- Strong conflict resolution and critical thinking skills.
