General Questions

Independent Rebuild Specialist was founded in 1999 and has grown from a field service operation into a specialist in high-horsepower engine remanufacturing. Specialization has been central to our growth, and over time we narrowed our focus to the engine platforms where we could build the greatest depth of experience, process control, and consistency.

We are not a general diesel repair shop or broad-line equipment rebuilder. We specialize in CAT 3500 and C175 engines and focus on providing a controlled rebuild process, direct accountability, detailed documentation, and practical support for customers who cannot afford premature failure.

Customers often come to us when they want more specialization, clearer accountability, faster communication, or additional options around engine availability. Rather than competing primarily on name recognition or price, we compete on process control, documentation, parts quality, responsiveness, and specialized expertise in CAT 3500 and C175 engines.

Yes. We can inspect and evaluate customer-supplied engines or cores to determine whether they meet minimum rebuild requirements. If they are suitable, we can rebuild or remanufacture them to specification. If a unit falls outside acceptable limits, we will clearly explain why and recommend the best next step.

We maintain a large inventory of cores and ready-to-ship rebuilt engines to give customers more options when availability matters. Current availability varies by engine model and arrangement, so customers should contact us to discuss their specific requirements and timeline.

Major rebuild functions including teardown, inspection, machining, assembly, and painting are handled within our facility. Keeping these stages under one roof reduces unnecessary handoffs and gives us greater control over workmanship, scheduling, communication, and accountability.

You will work directly with experienced technicians and service personnel who understand your equipment and scope of work. That gives you direct access to knowledgeable people who can answer questions, solve problems, and keep the job moving without unnecessary delays.

We manage shipping and logistics in-house through our dedicated team. This gives us greater control over scheduling, coordination, costs, and quality throughout the process, helping ensure engines and components are moved efficiently and delivered reliably.

Our remanufactured engines are backed by a 2-year / 4,000-hour warranty. Warranty coverage is designed to give customers added confidence that we stand behind the quality of the rebuild and the work performed. Independent Rebuild Specialist specializes in remanufactured CAT 3500 and C175 engines for demanding mining, oil and gas, and industrial applications. Each rebuilt engine goes through quality-control checks and final verification before it leaves our facility. Engines are also dyno tested prior to shipment so performance can be evaluated before the engine reaches the customer’s site.

Process Questions

We verify customer-provided engine information and begin the intake and documentation process. Establishing accurate engine identification and project information at the beginning helps ensure the engine is properly tracked throughout the rebuild.

Before teardown, the exterior is cleaned, available diagnostic information is reviewed, and the engine receives a visual inspection. As teardown progresses, components are examined further so issues that may not appear in diagnostic data can be identified and documented.

The engine is disassembled to the level required for a complete rebuild, with component groups inspected as they are removed. This allows our team to evaluate wear, damage, contamination, potential causes of engine failure, and other conditions that may affect the final rebuild.

Components are inspected, measured, and evaluated against the applicable specifications and rebuild requirements. Parts that do not meet acceptable standards are repaired where appropriate or replaced rather than being reused simply to reduce cost.

Machining is performed as required to restore critical surfaces and components to the specifications needed for proper assembly and operation. The extent of machining is determined by engine condition, component measurements, wear, and the requirements of the specific engine.

Yes. Engines are assembled to the required arrangement and application specifications. Correct configuration is important because a rebuilt engine must match the equipment and operating requirements it is being returned to.

Yes. We use genuine OEM parts as part of our standard rebuild approach. High-quality components coupled with disciplined assembly procedures enable us to deliver reliable engines our customers can count on in demanding field conditions.

We document key findings, measurements, parts, photographs, quality-control checks, and additional rebuild information throughout the process. This creates a clear record of the engine’s incoming condition, the work performed, and the steps taken to prepare it for return to service.

Completed engines go through final inspections and quality-control checks before release. Each engine is then dyno tested under controlled load conditions that simulate real-world demands, allowing us to verify performance before shipment.

Before shipment, the engine receives final condition checks, required covers and protection are installed, and the engine is secured for transport. Our process is designed to protect the work completed during the rebuild through the final handoff to the customer.

Field Support

Yes, 24/7 on-site field support is available for qualifying programs based on location, scope, and customer requirements. This service is currently focused primarily on Canadian oil sands operations where continuous equipment support can directly affect production.

Dedicated field support is currently concentrated in select Canadian oil sands service areas. Other North American projects may be considered depending on location, engine program, schedule, staffing requirements, and overall scope.

Qualifying programs can use four-person field service teams working two-week rotations. Within each rotation, two technicians are on shift and two are off shift, working 12-hour shifts to maintain continuous on-site coverage.

Field support can include installation assistance, commissioning, troubleshooting, maintenance support, inspections, warranty-related service, and site coordination. The exact scope is developed around the customer’s engine program and operating requirements.

Yes. Our technicians can provide support during installation preparation, startup, commissioning, and return-to-service activities. This helps create continuity between the rebuilt engine, the installation process, and the equipment’s return to operation.

Yes. Field technicians can assist when an operating issue or performance concern needs to be investigated. Having experienced personnel available on site can shorten communication paths and help customers determine the appropriate next step more quickly.

Career Questions

We hire for a variety of roles and experience levels, including engine technicians, machinists, field service technicians, diesel apprentices, and other technical and support positions. Due to the specialized nature of our work, most positions offer hands-on experience with high-horsepower engines and rebuild processes that are not commonly found in general repair shops.

Not every position requires previous diesel engine experience. For select entry-level roles, we look for candidates with mechanical aptitude, a strong work ethic, attention to detail, and a willingness to learn through hands-on training.

Entry-level technicians typically begin with hands-on training in teardown, engine systems, shop procedures, and the quality standards that guide each stage of the rebuild process.

Training is hands-on and designed to build comprehensive knowledge of the engines and rebuild process. During the first six months, entry-level technicians focus primarily on teardown to learn the shop, the engines, and the standards we expect. During months seven through twelve, they begin taking on light assembly work as their skills and understanding develop.

Our goal is to develop technicians with a comprehensive understanding of the rebuild process rather than limiting them to one repetitive assembly task. As their skills develop, employees gain experience across multiple stages of the process, building in-depth knowledge of each engine platform and the standards, precision, and workmanship required to produce a reliable rebuild.

Yes. We have a 10-year plan designed to provide technicians with a clear path for growth in technical capability, responsibility, and compensation. Technicians progress from entry-level teardown work into inspection and measurement, partial assembly, full teardown and assembly, complex diagnostics, quality control, mentoring, and eventually senior and master technician responsibilities.

Progression is based on demonstrated ability, not simply time in a position. Technicians who develop the required skills and consistently meet our standards can advance as quickly as their capabilities allow.

Shop-based positions are located at our purpose-built 40,000-square-foot headquarters in Brighton, Colorado, which opened in 2023. These roles are on-site Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Field service roles are based at client sites, including Canadian oil sands operations, and typically require two-week rotations with 12-hour shifts. 

We look for people who are dependable, coachable, detail-oriented, accountable, and serious about doing quality work. Mechanical aptitude and technical skill are important, but so are consistency, professionalism, willingness to learn, teamwork, and pride in the finished product.
